Pokémon Cards

Your kid traded in his toy cars for Pokemon cards, but you don’t know half of what he’s talking about. What is Pokemon What is a booster package? What is a trainer? Who is that Pikachu friend he keeps referring to? This guide is not a complete guide, and your child will always be one step ahead.

What is Pokemon?

Pokemon, a Japanese franchise, has been around for over 20 years. Its 25th anniversary was in 2121. The name Pokemon is short for “pocket monsters” and can be found on TV, as well as in trading cards, toys, video games, and other media. Pokemon are living creatures that can be found in nature or with their owner (as in your child), who is known as their trainer. The trainer’s goal in life is to catch them all. We mean all 900+.

What can you do with Pokemon cards?

Children in the younger grades (say JK-grade one) are more likely to trade and collect cards. They may want to learn to trade the cards. To build a strong deck of 60 cards that can help you beat other trainers, the point of collecting them is to do so. Your child might be more interested in the cards that he finds most interesting or valuable. Every pack of cards is unique so if your child doesn’t have any cards, or only a few, you might want to introduce him to a theme deck. This is a 60-card pack that comes in a small metal tin or cardboard box. You can also get a coin and markers for the theme decks that you can use in game play, such as when you count damage or decide who goes first. You can also buy booster packs of 10 cards in blister or tin packs.

A new season of a TV show usually sees new cards released. Your child might call this a “generation” or a “series.” These new series often coincide with the most recent video games. The trading card game is currently in its eighth generation. All of the cards from the latest collections will have the “Sword & Shield” label on them. But, Pokemon is preparing for its ninth generation release, which will be released in 2022.

What are the various types of Pokemon cards available?

There are three types of Pokemon cards you will find in a deck: Trainer cards, Energy cards, and Pokemon character cards.

Character cards

Each Pokemon is assigned a type, which in this case, there are 11, such as Fire, Water and Psychic. The upper left corner of each Pokemon card will indicate how evolved the character is, whether it’s in its basic form, Stage One or Stage Two forms. The Legendary Pokemon are the most sought-after cards for kids. They aren’t evolving and can be found only in booster packs.

Energy cards

These cards are essential to power your Pokemon through the game. You’ll always find basic energy cards in any pack that you buy. Special Energy cards can give you a different type of boost depending on the Pokemon.

Training cards

These cards can be used to purchase items, supporters, and stadiums that you can use in a battle. These cards have special rules that are noted at the bottom.

My child wants Pokemon EX and GX cards. What are they?

These Pokemon cards have more power and cooler illustrations. They can be printed with the words “EX” (or “GX”) right on them. These cards are highly sought-after by little children because they can sometimes be shiny or even holographic.

What are Pokemon booster and expansion packs? They are what my child is looking for.

An expansion is a set of new cards that are released in a specific series or generation. Each expansion contains between 100 and 200 new cards. You cannot purchase the entire expansion at once. You can purchase them in booster boxes, which are 10 cards sets that you can add to your existing collection. These booster packs are usually themed within an expansion and can contain any cards from that set. The accompanying expansion packs and card series for Pokemon’s ninth-generation video games, Pokemon Scarlet, and Pokemon Violet, have not been announced. Your child might still want cards from older expansion packs. These include cards from previous generations such as Sword & Shield and Sun & Moon.

How do you know if a Pokemon Card is rare?

The rarity of a card can be identified by a tiny symbol in the lower right-hand corner. A circle means your card is common; a diamond means your card’s rarity, and a star signifies it’s uncommon. Hologram cards, for example, will always have stars.

How can you play the Pokemon trading cards game (TCG).

You have many options for teaching your child how to trade cards. A Trainer Kit is the best way to learn. The Trainer Kit includes two decks of ready-to-play cards that will guide your child and friend through each step. After your child is comfortable with the deck, you can move on to a theme deck. You can also learn how to play online with great resources: The Pokemon website offers a tutorial. However, you can also find rules and guidelines online for each generation. If you are unsure, ask your child to find a friend who knows the game.
