No matter what you’re into, we’ll show you how to play Minecraft with your friends!

Instructions have been included for Minecraft Java Edition (JE), and Minecraft Bedrock Editions (BE).

Minecraft Multiplayer on Public Servers

Java Edition

Most Java players connect with other Java players by using public servers. Servers can be joined for free and are easily found on any of the numerous server-listing websites such as MinecraftServers.org. (Just search “Minecraft Servers” in your browser to see more listing sites).

While we’ve already covered How To Join a Minecraft Server in detail, here’s a quick overview:

  1. Copy the IP address of the server that you wish to join. This will look something like “makeuseof.example.com”
  2. Navigate to the Multiplayer screen within your Minecraft client. Click on Add server or Direct connection.
  3. In the box marked Server address, paste the IP address.
  4. Step 3: Give the server a name, and click Add Server. Next, double-click on the server in your list or choose Join server. If you chose Direct Connection, click Join Server.

Bedrock Edition

Although your reach is smaller than Java Edition players, there are still public servers that you can use to play Minecraft with Bedrock Edition friends.

  1. Start Minecraft BE. Click Play to navigate to the servers tab.
  2. Choose from the Featured servers that have a large player count and feature game modes such as Skywars, Build battle, and many more.
  3. Click Add Server to add another server.
  4. Enter the name of the server, IP address, and port. To save this server, click Save

All set! Enjoy Minecraft multiplayer in Bedrock Edition.

Minecraft Multiplayer for Private Servers

You will need the IP address of your friend who is hosting a private server from their computer or a third-party hosting service. To join, copy and paste the IP address as you would for a public server address.

Minecraft Multiplayer Made Easy with Realms

Realms are compatible with both Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition. However, they cannot be used by a friend who is playing on Java Edition.

Realms are Minecraft’s servers. This is the easiest way for you to create a private space to build and craft with your friends.

How to create a real estate

Java Edition – First, you will need to buy a subscription for Realm (you’ll find the pricing plans on Minecraft’s website). To test the waters, you can activate a 30-day trial and cancel at any time.

After you have purchased a subscription, open Minecraft and click Minecraft Realms. Click to create your first Realm. You can then name your Realm, and provide a brief description. Then choose your world type.

You can choose between creating a new world or uploading a save from a previous world. Or, you can explore Realms World templates and Adventures as well as Experiences.

After you have created your Realm click on Configure Reality and then click on Players. To whitelist, a friend, click Invite Player and enter their username before clicking Invite Player again. Your friend will be invited to join your Realm.

Bedrock Edition – Minecraft BE is slightly more complicated.

  1. Start Minecraft BE, and click Play. Go to Worlds, and select Create a New.
  2. You can choose to create a new world.
  3. From the left pane, select Create on Realms. You can choose between a 2 and 10-player Realm.
  4. To create a 2-Player Realm, name your Realm and read the Terms and Conditions.
  5. To purchase a 10-Player Realm, select Buy Now in the navigation menu. Name your Realm and accept the terms and conditions. Then, select Free Trial.

How to join a Minecraft Realm

Java Edition – If you have been invited to join a friend’s Realms, open Minecraft and navigate Minecraft Realms.

A small envelope symbol is located at the top of your screen to the right where it says Minecraft Realms. This envelope holds any invites that you have received. Click it to join your friend’s Realm.

Bedrock Edition – Ask the Realm creator for the invite code. This should look like “realms. gg/ABC XYZ”–we only need the characters after “realms. gg/”.

Start Minecraft and click Play. Go to Friends, then click Join Realm. Enter the invite code that you were given by the Realm owner, and click Join. Now you’re done!

How to Play Minecraft with Friends

Minecraft Bedrock Edition is one of many games that support cross-platform play. The only problem is that Java Edition users cannot play with Bedrock Edition.

You can play Bedrock Edition on an iPhone or Android, while your friend is playing on their Xbox, PC, or VR headset. You can link up with other players using one of these methods. Realms are the best option for a seamless experience.

How to Play Minecraft LAN

Servers are great for playing Minecraft with distant friends, but LAN connections are a great way to create with your friends in the nearby area.

Java Edition

You can join a player if you are under the same IP address as them. Start Minecraft and click Multiplayer. Minecraft will scan your local network for any games.

You’ll see a list of servers that a player has a LAN server available for them to join. Double-tap the server to highlight it and click join Server.

Bedrock Edition

In Bedrock Edition, LAN play is enabled by default. Navigate to the Worlds Tab and any games that are available on your network will appear there for you to join.

Minecraft Split screen

Split screen Minecraft Bedrock Edition can be played on LAN. It supports up to four players.

You can now play Minecraft multiplayer
